Valve Insulation Jackets For Plant Room

Walk into almost any plant room and you will find the same thing: well-insulated pipework running between clusters of bare, uninsulated valves and fittings. Those valves are losing heat every hour of every day. Across a plant room with a typical number of valves, the combined loss adds up to a significant and ongoing energy cost that is easy to address but frequently overlooked.

This case study describes a plant room installation where Lagflex supplied a full set of removable valve insulation jackets and pipework covers, covering a range of valve types and pipe sizes across the system. The client needed heat loss addressed, surface temperatures brought down to a safe level, and the flexibility to access any part of the system quickly when maintenance was required.

The challenge

Plant rooms present a specific insulation challenge. The pipework itself is typically well covered, but the valves, flanges and fittings that connect it are left bare. Each uninsulated valve effectively acts as a radiator, losing heat to the surrounding air constantly and raising the ambient temperature in the room while driving up energy costs.

The client had looked at hard lagging for the valves previously but found that maintenance access requirements made it impractical. Every time a valve needed to be operated or inspected, the lagging had to be removed and could not always be reinstated to the same standard. Removable jackets were the right answer, but they needed to fit properly and perform reliably, not just tick a box.

The Lagflex solution

Lagflex supplied a combination of valve insulation jackets and pipe section covers across the plant room. The supply covered standard-sized valves from our range as well as bespoke insulation jackets manufactured to fit the non-standard components on site.

The supply included:

Gate valve insulation jackets for isolation valves on the heating mains
Ball valve jackets across control and isolation points throughout the system
Bespoke covers for non-standard fittings and configurations not covered by the standard range
Pipe section covers for key exposed sections of pipework within the plant room

Every jacket was made to the specific pipe dimensions on this site. This is not something that can be achieved with standard thermal insulation jackets. Getting the fit right on external pipework is particularly important because any gaps or loose edges become entry points for moisture, which degrades the insulation from the inside and significantly reduces its effective life.
